All Knowing

I was the latest in a long line of many, but I had served my master well through many adventures.  I was his confidante, the one to whom he spoke even when words would not come easily.  A brilliant man was my master, so much that his own thoughts could overwhelm him.  I was a consummate listener, and never did I judge him.

I didn't always travel with him, but upon his return, my master would tell me of his joys and pains, seeking the comfort that only I and my kind could give him.  I knew my time was drawing near—that I would soon be set aside and replaced with another—but I cherished the time we had.

One day, my master's friend with the rough-but-gentle hands like his placed me in a box.  I knew then that my master would never again share a story with another of my kind.  For many months, I and my kind lay in silence until our box was finally opened again.  As another, more familiar pair of hands lightly traced my spine, I realized the truth.

My beloved master had returned, and would need his faithful journal once more.
